World Heritage Day

World Heritage Day is celebrated on 18th April annually. The day is also known as the International Monuments and Sites Day.The concept for World Heritage Day was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in 1982 and was accepted by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) during the 22nd General Meeting in 1983.

 People around the world celebrate this day to share and celebrate the cultural, spiritual and religious heritage of the country. The day is all about increasing the awareness of the importance of the diversity of cultural heritage and maintaining it properly for generations in the future. On this day various events happen in various places to cherish their heritage.

The day is celebrated with different types of activities, including visits to monuments and heritage sites, conferences, round tables and newspaper articles etcetera. The year 2024 is going to be a historic milestone for India, the nation is set to chair the UNESCO World Heritage Committee and host its 46th session in New Delhi from 21st to 31st July,2024.

After this celebration, National Heritage Week 2024 will take place from 17th to 25th August,  2024.

 Every year, the World Heritage Day is celebrated under a specific theme. This year the nation will celebrate the theme of “Connections, Routes & Networks”.  The Galapagos Islands and Quito in Ecuador  were the first ever certified UNESCO sites. The most important motto to celebrate this day is to enjoy the nation’s cultural diversity and preserve it for future identity.

Besides , to keep the monuments protected and keep them always fresh and clean, to enhance awareness about the importance of cultural heritage, and monuments and conserving them. The day basically recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of nation. Even various programmes are performed or staged  through out the country to commemorate this prestigious day.
