Vivekananda Jayanti is known as National Youth Day. It is celebrated on 12 January as it is the birthday of the Hindu monk, Swami Vivekananda. He was born on 12th January in 1863. In 1984, the Government of India declared this day would be celebrated as National Youth Day.
Swami Vivekananda thought deeply about education and what it meant for Indian society. He treated education as the primary means of rebuilding Indian society. According to him, education is the key to reform the Indian youth. Swami Vivekananda’s real name was Narendranath Datta. He was an Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, author, religious teacher, and the chief disciple of the Ramakrishna Paramhansha Dev.
The Ramakrishna mission was founded by Ramakrishna’s chief disciple Swami Vivekananda on 1 May 1897. The organisation mainly propagates the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta–Advaita Vedanta and four yogic ideals – Jnana, Bhakti, Karma, and Raja yoga. Swami Vivekananda was greatly influenced by his guru Ramkrishna who was also the believer of universalism.
National Youth Day is observed to create awareness and provides knowledge about the rights of people in India. The main objective behind the celebration of the day is to make a better future for the country by motivating the youth and spreading the ideas of the Swami Vivekananda. National Youth Day is also famous as Yuva Diwas. National Youth Day is celebrated every year annually at many centres of Ramakrishna Math, Ramakrishna Mission, and at various schools, and colleges with great enthusiasm and energy .
According to Indian culture and tradition, this day is celebrated by performing the parade, speech on Swami Vivekananda, recitations, songs, conventions, essay-writing competitions, seminars, etc. Vivekananda’s desire was to inspire the Indian youths. . Several competitions are also performed to celebrate the day pompously. As Vivekananda had a great love for youth and youths are the support system of a nation, to encourage them, his birthday is celebrated as National Youth Day.
