Children’s Day is celebrated on 14th November annually across India to raise awareness about the rights, education, and welfare of children. It is the birthday of the first prime minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He was known as chacha Nehru as well and he had an immense love for the children. On this day, many educational and motivational programmes are organised for children all over India.

On the occasion of Children’s Day, enjoyable events like- fashion shows, drawing competitions, quiz contests, campaigns, rallies, poster-making, singing , dance , speeches etc. are organised across the country. On this day, educational institutions organise various cultural and academic programmes to inculcate the value of leadership, simplicity, and integrity in students. Children are the future citizens of a nation and they are always special. So to make their day more special and to entertain them, various types of programmes are organised by schools, clubs and other institutions.

The day is celebrated on November 14th to pay tribute to Nehru’s immense love and appreciation for children. He believed that children are the future of the nation. They must be nurtured and educated with tenderness. Nehru shared a close bond with children and was fond of them. Some years earlier, before the death of this legend, in India, Children’s Day was celebrated on November 20th as it is the Universal Children’s Day declared by the United Nations. After Jawaharlal Nehru’s demise in 1964, to honour the iconic figure Chacha Nehru, the day is celebrated on 14th November on his birthday.

The day is observed to ensure basic needs and rights of every child, irrespective of their caste, creed, financial or political status. It also emphasises to have proper healthcare and sanitation. Apart from providing all these, it is also important to save them from social evils like child trafficking, illiteracy and child labour and gift them a very bright and happy place to stay.
