Introduction:

‘Thanks giving’ is a national holiday for some countries. On various dates in October and November , United States, Canada, Saint Lucia, Liberia, Brazil, Germany, Philippines etcetera celebrate this day. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessings of the harvest and of the preceding year. Various similarly named harvest festivals and holidays occur throughout the world during Autumn which is regarded as the season of fall.

Meaning of ‘Thanks Giving’:

Thanks giving is simply a chance to appreciate the good things in life, like family, community, and the riches of the land. Long before settlers arrived, Native tribes celebrated the Autumn harvest and the gift of Mother Earth’s abundance.

How do people celebrate the day:

As it’s a very important day, people try to celebrate this day pompously. The most typical way of celebrating Thanks giving is having dinner with a large roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Watching the Thanksgiving Day parade, football, volunteering, and playing games are also another ways to celebrate this Thanksgiving day.

How and when is Thanks giving celebrated in various countries:

Various countries celebrate this day on various days and in various ways. The countries like United States and Canada observe this day as National holidays. They celebrate the harvest and other blessings of the year on this day. For these countries, on 28th November , 2024, the day will be celebrated. They celebrate this day on the fourth Thursday of November. Liberia celebrates this day on the first Thursday of November. Through the celebration of this day, they try to mark the founding of the country in 1822 by freed American slaves. Japan Celebrates this day on 23rd November as “Labour Thanksgiving Day”, to honour all the workers in their community. 

         Germany celebrates this day as Erntedankfest, which includes religious ceremonies, communal gatherings, and good food. United Kingdom celebrates as the Harvest Festival of Thanksgiving. In Netherlands, they celebrate this day on the 4th Thursday of November which is a public holiday for them. Some restaurants in the Netherlands serve Thanks giving meals also to celebrate this day. Brazilian Thanks giving, Dia de Ação de Graças , follows the American tradition of a harvest feast. China celebrates the day as the Mid-Autumn Festival. Besides, South Korea, Mexico, Norfolk Island, Ghana, Poland etcetera also celebrate this day in their own style.

Importance of Thanks giving :

Celebration of Thanksgiving is important for various reasons. It includes:
i) A form of worship: In the Bible, it is written that Thanksgiving is a pious act of worship. Celebration of this day acknowledges God’s supreme power and the divine hand that guides human existence.
ii) A chance to express gratitude: Thanksgiving is a day to express gratitude for God’s gifts and offerings. On this day, through various observations, people repent for sins, and ask for forgiveness.
iii) A spiritual practice: Thanksgiving should be a daily practice that can deepen spiritual life and enrich the relationship with God.
iv) A way to maintain healthy relationships: Expressing gratitude , and giving thanks, can help to bond with others and lead to better relationships with others.
v) A way to honour God: Thanksgiving is an act of love and affection that honours God.
